سريال مال دهه هشتاد است. جيم هکر به عنوان وزيری در کابينه دولت انگلستان منصوب شده و آدم چندان جدیای نيست. در وزارت معاون ثابت وزارتخانه، سر هامفری اپلبی، که همه کاره وزارت است سعی میکند حريف تازهکار را دستآموز کند تا زياد پی سياستها و نظرات مشعشع خودش نرود و سر هامفری بتواند در کمال آرامش نقطه نظرات بدنهی بوروکراتيک وزارتخانه را پيش ببرد. اين وسط معاون خصوصی وزير، برنارد وولی هم هست که کارش يا تکمضراب زدن وسط بحثهای بیپايان و بی سر و ته هکر و سر هامفری است يا بين وفاداری به هر کدام از اين دو قطب هميشه متضاد مردد مانده. طنز سريال واقعاً ظريف و عالی است. تکتک اشارات کار برده و کمدی بر اساس محتواست. البته تماشايش بعضاً ديکشنری و تمرکز زياد میخواهد؛ به خصوص فهميدن حرفهای سر هامفری که طوری حرف میزد که عموماً جيم هکر آخر خطابهاش میپرسد چی؟ مثلاً اين را گوش کنيد:

در تمام داستانها جيم هکر میخواهد کاری بکند و هميشهی خدا سر هامفری به دليلی مخالف است و بعد با هزار و يک دوز و کلک کاری میکند که آن طرح يا بخوابد يا خود وزير تغييرات لازم را درش بدهد و تازه خيال کند کار خودش بوده. آخر فصل سوم سريال طی يک سری وقايع واقعاً احمقانه و خندهدار جناب جيم هکر به نخست وزيری میرسد و همراهش سر هافری و برنارد هم میروند (در حقيقت سر هافری، هکر را نخست وزير میکند) و ابعاد درگيریهايشان از استخدام چند تايپيست در وزارت به قراردادهای موشکهای بالستيک میرسد. البته بعد از نخست وزيری، هکر هر از گاهی حريف سر هامفری میشود، ولی باز هم نمیشود گفت مملکت را کدام میچرخانند.
پدرسوختگی سر هامفری و کلاً بدنه بورکراتيک و کهنه دولت دقيقاً همانی است که دايیجان ناپلئون سالها حرفش را زد و ما باور نکرديم. ديدن اينکه اين جماعت چطور سر ديگران و خدا و خودشان کلاه میگذارند و عزرائيل را دچار بحران هويت میکنند ديدنی است. خلاصه اگر آدم حوصله سر درآوردن داشته باشد از خنده خفه میشود. روی هم سی و هفت قسمت نيم ساعته است. هر سه بازيگر از بازيگران تئاتر هستند و ول کن سناريوی عالی سريال را، بازیهايشان واقعاً ديدنی است. کل سريال هم يک اسطوره در تاريخ تلويزيون انگلستان است. زمان پخشش با دوران مارگارت تاچر يکی بوده و همه جا مینويسند که مارگرات تاچر عاشق اين سريال بوده، جز اينکه فکر نمیکرده جيم هکر در ابعاد نخست وزيری بوده است.
